Lavrentiy Beria[]
Lavrentiy Pavlovich Beria was a Soviet politician, and chief of the Soviet security and secret police apparatus under Stalin. He was top deputy of the NKVD during the Great Purge, responsible for many of the millions of imprisonments and killings. Then at the end of the Purge (1936–1938), he became head of the NKVD, and carried out a purge of the NKVD itself. Beria was most influential during and after World War II.
Under Khrushchev, Beria carries out the responsibilities of "Minister of the Interior" handling domestic issues when Khrushchev is otherwise engaged with international affairs. He also enjoys his role as official Politburo Liaison to the NKVD, working closely with a trusted leiutenant that he appointed to head the NKVD upon his appointment to the Politburo. As deputy to Khrushchev he bears a seething resentment as he felt that he was the prime candidate to replace Stalin when he died. There are rumours that Beria was somehow involved in Stalin's death, though unfounded they appear to be popular.
